Marmite - Always Remembered: Marmite’s Story: As told to DDA Watch and shared by DDA Watch with the kind permission of those who loved and cared for him.
‘I am very sad that I do not have a picture of Marmite, the beautiful dog that really made me aware of BSL and broke my heart.
We were not allowed to take pictures because he was in a holding kennels.
Marmite had been abused (burnt and beaten) and I worked in the kennels at the time.
He was so well trained he wouldn’t even go to the toilet in his kennel and I had to take him out three times a day.
I washed him every other day with special treatment to make his fur grow where he had been burnt so badly. He started to look much better, I introduced him to my own dog and I loved him so much.
After two months he was much better, and I was going to adopt him.
Then one day we had a PTS notice served on him (meaning he had to be put to sleep within 24 hours) and that was that.
The police would not give us any details, they just said he must be destroyed because of his ‘type’.
I took Marmite for a long walk and fed him a whole packet of Hobnob biscuits and then they sedated him, and I held him whilst they killed him.
Even the vet was holding back tears, she said how much better his coat looked from when he came in.
A little bit of my heart broke off that day.
I wish I had just one picture of him, he was beautiful.’
